Desktop computers are traditionally connected to the Internet using a wired connection, such as a modem or a network connection. Wired connections are usually faster and more reliable, but they require that cabling be run to wherever the desktop computer is installed. However, the continued expansion of wireless network technologies has made it more and more accessible to use wireless as a quick and flexible alternative to a wired connection. Advances in wireless technology have made it reliable and fast, and converting a desktop to wireless is quite easy.
Instructions
1. Installing a PCI Wireless Networking Card (Option 1)
· Your wireless adapter card will have a driver CD in the packaging. Insert the CD into your computer and follow the on-screen instructions to install the software to your desktop computer.
· Power off and unplug your computer, and remove the case access panel, usually on the right side of the case. Most modern computers can be opened without tools, but some still require a Phillips screw driver to open.
· Locate an open expansion slot on the motherboard. These slots are usually white or tan colored, and line up with the metal slots on the back of the computer. Remove the metal cover on the rear of the computer case that matches the expansion slot of your choice.
· Align the row of gold contacts on the edge of your PCI wireless card with the open expansion slot and press the card into place. It will sit in the expansion slot and the antenna on the card will fit through the slot on the back of the computer case.
· Secure the newly installed card. Some computer cases use screws to hold the cards in place, while others are designed with a locking bar that clips in place without needing tools.
· Reinstall the right side case access panel and power up the computer.
· Enter the connection information for your wireless network into the connection manager software for your new wireless card. Your desktop will now be able to connect to your wireless network.
2. Install a USB Wireless Adapter (Option 2)
· Install the software on the CD that came with your USB wireless adapter.
· Plug the USB wireless adapter into an available USB port on the computer.
· Enter the connection information for your wireless network into the USB adapter's wireless connection manager software. Your desktop can now connect to your wireless network.
